Pretty much anything with “Sancerre” on the label sells these days, so feel free to pay more for less if you’re into that. But if you want the essence of fruit/chalk/gunflint aromas and flavors and the dusty, almost salty, finish that made Sancerre famous, put some of your money back in your pocket and drink this. From just across the Loire from Sancerre, it’s just plain excellent, cool and pure with just-right weight and density. Not really fruity, although white fleshed orchard fruits and green/yellow citrus is there. Instead it’s harmonious, stony, pure and very long on the mouthwatering gunflint-flecked finish.
For You If: You remember what Sancerre tasted like and cost before climate change and want to go back in time for just long enough to enjoy that again; you love Sauvignon Blanc with vibrancy and cut and minerality and are ok with skipping grassy grapefruit.
Not For You If: You love the wildness, exuberance, and flamboyance of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and want that tonight; you want rich, creamy, textured wine – this is focused and nearly crunchy.
