Regularly ranked as one of Austria’s top reds (and #1 Red in the 2013 vintage), Christina Netzl crafts this from Zweigelt (60%) plus Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the poorest, rockiest, soils in Carnuntum. The fruit is dark and shaped and enriched by 18 months in 50% new, 50% second use, French oak. Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl describes it well in her 93 point Vinous review, “The nose is immediately stony with notes of graphite alongside blueberry. The palate is fine and bright, compact and elegant. The tannins have micro finesse, crunching very gently, lending structure and poise. In the distance, there is slight heat but also an intrinsic coolness. The 2020 is profound, elegant and needs bottle age.” Decant for a few hours now or wait until 2026.
For You If: You want to experience a top red that’s distinctly Austrian but delivers the kind of structure and finesse you’d expect from outstanding Bordeaux.
Not For You If: You’re looking for a pop-n-pour or easygoing red to drink tonight – this will show now with time open but it’s really best to hold a bit and then enjoy with rich, meaty, food.
"The 2020 Ried Bärnreiser Anna-Christina was picked in the estate's driest, poorest, warmest but also windiest site on Danubian gravel with sandy, calcareous loess on top of clay layers. It is a blend of 60% Zweigelt, 20% Blaufränkisch and 20% Merlot. It was fermented in an open wooden cuve, then pressed and matured for 18 months in half-new, half-used barrique. The nose is immediately stony with notes of graphite alongside blueberry. The palate is fine and bright, compact and elegant. The tannins have micro finesse, crunching very gently, lending structure and poise. In the distance, there is slight heat but also an intrinsic coolness. The 2020 is profound, elegant and needs bottle age."
