Organic/Bio What I’ve learned about Passopisciaro’s Etna Chardonnays is you must give yourself three tastes before you understand what’s going on. Chardonnay of these poor volcanic soils is so mineral and intense that at first you think “cool climate Chablis.” But give it just a moment and you’ll notice the fruit getting richer, even a little exotic, as the wine broadens to coat your mouth completely. This is from a tiny, tiny, plot of vines Andrea Franchetti planted in the Passochianche contrada around 3,000 feet done in large oak. Maybe “Puligny Montrachet meets the Santa Cruz Mountains” suggests the results. If you love Chardonnay and don’t try this, then you’ll have missed something very special and brilliant indeed.

Silky and enveloping, this impresses today with its undeniable elegance and seamless wave of ripe orchard fruit. A subtle staining of minerality slowly builds. It tapers off long yet nuanced with lemon sorbet and mint suggestions. The 2021 is already showing beautifully, yet cellaring will surely bring more layers to the surface.
