Organic/Bio Contrada Rampante is Passopisciaro's highest cru and, at 3,300 feet, at the very limit of where Nerello Mascalese can be grown. It's loaded with floral perfume and lifted by vital acidity, but the fruit - sweet/tart, citric, etherial - is there to give balance and delight. As "beautiful" as Etna reds can be.
"Lighter color but a kaleidoscope of character from dried roses and other flowers, to cedar and dried lemon. Botanicals and perfume. Pumice. Medium-bodied with very polished tannins, like the finest silk. Caresses your palate. Better in two or three years but already glorious."
"Contrada Rampante is the highest of Passopisciaro's contrada vineyards, located at 1,000m – considered the limit for winemaking on Etna. The ancient lava here has broken down to a sandy consistency. Sourced from the estate's 1.4ha of vines here, it's a bright and focused red which homes in on raspberry and pomegranate fragrance accompanied by herbal, leafy notes and hints of crushed rock and volatile acidity. Tangy, sweet red fruits and orange peel emerge on a poised and silky palate, balanced by acidic bite and fine, round tannins. Some earthiness on the long, floral finish. Superb. 4,600 bottles produced."
