Nicola Argamante and his wife, Loredana, make around 7,000 cases of wine per year from their 30 acres of vines near Monforte d’Alba. This is their daily drinker, mainly Dolcetto plus splashes of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Albarossa and Pinot Nero. “Matrot” is dialect for a young boy, and this is as boisterious and playful as it’s namesake, with dark red cherry and raspberry fruit, a mouthwatering squirt of berry juice and firm, chunky, tannins. It’s a great all-purpose red and the tannins are fine and smooth enough that it takes a chill happily.
For You If: You’re looking for handcrafted wine at bargain prices to enjoy with pizza, burgers, salami, grilled veggies or anything else that happens to land on your plate.
Not For You If: You want something either really rich or very smooth – this is more fresh/juicy in feel and has noticeable tannins at the end – sweet and ripe tannins, for sure, but definitely present.
