Organic/Bio Although tagged with a humble “Vin de Pays” appellation, Eric Bouletin’s Pichot Roucas is really a wonderfully soulful and delicious Cotes du Rhone made from declassified Vacqueyras and juice from a vineyard along the Ouvèze river that was somehow left out of the Cotes du Rhone boundaries. It’s roughly equal parts Grenache, Syrah and very old-vine Carignan, all grown organically, tended and harvested by hand, and harvested at yields Eric says are “not enough to be profitable, but enough to be good!” Most of the Carignan goes into the vat as whole clusters – for spice and grip – while most of the Grenache and Syrah are destemmed – adding fruit and keeping things supple – and all of it rests six months in concrete tanks to come together nicely.
It's a big wine (14.0% alcohol) that presents remarkably fresh and light on its feet. You'll love the bold, Rhone, aromas of crushed dark berries and wild scents of lavender, sage and rosemary garigue. Flavors of ripe blackberry, raspberry and blueberry flow generously across your palate with captivating accents of lavender, orange blossom, bitter chocolate and more. Eric intends this to be his everyday “house red,” opened for casual visits with friends and to be enjoyed during lunch break in the vineyards or with casual dinners at day’s end. We think you’ll enjoy it that way, too!
For You If: You’re after an organic Cotes du Rhone that drinks with plenty of volume but also freshness; you’re looking for a solid French house red to carry you from spring-summer-fall.
Not For You If: You’re after either the super-red fruit of an all Grenache wine or the savory, earthy, character of a mostly Syrah bottling – this is in between.
