Organic/Bio We could go on and on about how the soils here are identical to Chateauneuf du Pape across the river, how the Jaume family farms their vines organically and to very low yields, and how that use a blend of concrete tank and French oak cask to bring the most out of the perfectly ripe blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.
But that’s not the point. This is one of the most delicious wines in the store, every bit as fine as the 2016 editing that broke all kinds of sales records here in the ship. It’s loaded with deep, rich, red fruit flavors match by bold notes of black pepper, wild herbs, and hot, dusty, stone minerality. It’s definitely mouthfilling and powerful, but feels silky through the middle before turning velvety on the long, flowing, finish. It’s stunning now from the moment you pop the cork, opens up and gains flesh in decanter, and will sing along nicely in your cellar through 2035 or more. It will delight with all kinds of robustly flavored foods and – if you like big wines – make you happy all by itself. Just buy it while you can at these terrific prices.
For You If: You like big reds with real presence are in the mood for something that doesn’t taste like Napa Cabernet; you’re after a pretty perfect pairing for grilled and roasted meats, especially lamb, and stews and salads laced with savory herbs and black olives; you want to see what happens when you hold a bottle for a few years – just stick it in a dark closet or under a bed in the basement for a few years and you’ll be thrilled with the results!
Not For You If: You’re looking for something light, elegant and/or lower in alcohol – this is big, bold, and ripe the way Grenache needs to be when it grows in the heart of France’s Southern Rhone.
