Lower ABV We don’t like orange wine just because it’s cool or hip or…well, orange. And Gewürztraminer is tricky, all too often veering off in the heavy, soapy and/or sweet direction. But Morgan Lee has put these two elements together into one of the most “you simply have to taste this to believe it” wines we’ve tried this year. It’s 100% Gewurtz that soaks 8 weeks (!!!!!) on the skins in Spanish clay tinajas (giant clay pots). Which means it really should be oxidized or volatile or just plain weird.
Nope – it’s stunning. Be warned, when you smell it you both won’t be able to tear yourself away AND will be 100% certain the wine is sweet. Again, nope. It’s assertively dry and not even fruity, but instead layered with wild spices and what lychee must taste like when it’s a bit green and an orange has been zested over it. The spice, orange peel and floral flavors stay on your palate for minutes. Just 13.0% alcohol and only 75 cases made, so it’s a good thing most will pass it by just because it’s orange and Gewürztraminer. We know you won’t make that mistake.
For You If: You think riding a rollercoaster through a field of flowering citrus trees next to a spice warehouse sounds like fun.
Not For You If: You want sweet or sour or funky – this is dry, balanced and as close to “pure” as this grape can get.
