The Billecart family makes classic Champagne and this is a lovely introduction to the style. It’s roughly equal parts Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay from 2019 and nearly 40% reserve wines going back to 2016 with about 8% of the base wine done in barrel. Aromas and flavors of pear, pie cherry, dried flowers and a touch of brioche flow easily across the pinpoint bubbles and generous, dry, finish (just 3 g/l dosage). Delicious with or without food.
For You If: You’re longing for classic Champagne that’s nicely rich and drinkable and still fully dry and a bit toasty; you’ve enjoyed Billecart-Salmon’s wines in the past – this is still in the house style, just a touch more refined and complete.
Not For You If: You’re after the zing and bit of Extra But or Brut Nature Champagne – the ripeness makes this feel more generous than the Extra Brut dosage suggests.
"The NV Brut Réserve (2019 base) is a fine introduction to this range. Medium in body and quite gracious, the tasty NV Brut Réserve offers up hints of dried pear, spice, dried flowers, kirsch and chamomile. This is a big step up from what was the norm here a few years ago. This release is based on 2019, with 38% reserve wines going back to 2006. A touch of wood-fermentation (8%) works well here. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: fourth trimester 2023."
