Organic/Bio If it didn’t sound bad we’d call Remi Georgeton a “farmer Champagne maker” because “grower” just doesn’t begin to cover it. Since taking over from his parents in 2006, he’s converted his multiple plots of 3.1 hectares of vines to organic farming. And he farms the dickens out of them. I’ve never had a visit at a Champagne producer where we spent so much time inspecting and admiring his tractors, a wildly sophisticated sprayer that basically grabs and sprays each vine to limit copper reaching the soil, electric ground cart to permit intense handwork of his very short-pruned vines, etc.
Even with all his farming work, Remi has put in the time to be a heck of a winemaker, too. Here he’s working with Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay from four different villages and all vintage 2020 with one-third done in barrel and just 22 months on the lees. It’s beautiful, clear as a bell with tangy berry and crunchy apple and pear fruit framed by notes of toast and a light touch of smoke. At just 3 g/l dosage, it’s bone dry and certainly racy, but not at all harsh or austere. Finishes with terrific energy and will be great with food, but no harm in just pouring a glass and enjoying!
For You If: You like your Champagne racy and vibrant and mouthwatering with white fruit and just a touch of spice/smoke; you want to see what an ultra-small, ultra-committed, farmer/winemaker can do!
Not For You If: You like your Champagnes more broad or soft; you’re looking for a lot of buttery brioche character.
