Lower ABV Juan Antonio Ponce enrolled in winemaking school at 14, was legendary Telmo Rodriguez’s assistant for a half decade, and then founded his own winery at the age of 25. His passion is capturing the flavors of high, hot, Manchuela in a fresh, easy to love, style. Here he’s working with Monestrell grown at altitude and on limestone, and coxes out plenty of dark berry fruit and earthy base notes in a vivid, pure, wine of just 12% alcohol. If there’s a better summer grilling wine than this, we don’t know it!
For You If: Like us you find the concept of cool wines from hot places fascinating and irresistible; you need a red able to handle big flavors at the table without weighing you down with alcohol or oak; you like Cru Beaujolais – this isn’t that, exactly, but scratches the same itch.
Not For You If: You want a lot of power and volume and thickness in your red – this has plenty of flavor and presence, but stays more elegant and fresh than, say, a Ribera del Duero Tempranillo.
"The Monastrell red 2021 Depaula comes from vines at 700 meters in altitude on very poor soils, and sometimes the grapes don't ripen properly; but that was not the case in 2021, when the vines had enough water to ripen all the grapes thoroughly and produced a wine with very pure varietal character. It's fresh, balsamic and herbal, with a limestone core that delivers length and freshness coupled with a juicy Mediterranean character. Really good value. The wine has an incredible 12.5% alcohol. It's quite different from the 2020; they picked the grapes 15 days later than normal, and the grapes ripened properly, keeping a very low alcoholic degree. Funnily enough, it has darker aromas and rougher tannins."
