I believe the technical tasting note for this wine, as approved by all the most serious wine writers, is: Hubba Hubba. There’s this thing white Burgundy winemakers do where they let the wine sit in the barrel on what’s left of the spent yeast from fermentation for a long while. The yeast scavenges oxygen from the wine and causes something called “reduction.” Done wrong and your wine smells like burnt rubber and used gym socks. Done just right and you get this note that’s like what you smell after a piece of gunflint strikes on steel. It screams “minerality,” which is just the extra notch of Chardonnay complexity needed in a warm, ripe, year like 2022.
Under that flinty smoke is gloriously ripe apple, pear and stone fruit that’s been tossed quickly in tangy French butter, dusted with crushed hazelnuts, sprinkled with lemon and lime juice and garnished with a single mint leaf. That all that flavor intensity could be delivered with a palate that’s so gloriously transparent and fluid is pretty stunning. That you can enjoy a wine of this quality now and for 15+ years at these prices is, perhaps, more stunning still!
For You If: You enjoy Puligny Montrachet’s captivating blend of power and finesses and want to enjoy drinking one now and for years at a very good price; you’re about to eat something rich and earthy – think scallops with cream and mushrooms – and want a perfect pairing to enjoy, too.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the buttery fatness of Meursault – which, to be honest, we also like a lot! But this is more mineral and sleek in feel.
