Lower ABV From the volcanic soils of Italy’s Campi Flegrei – or, the Phlegraean Fields – where moon-like craters dot the landscape and more than 100 pools bubble and steam away a few miles from Naples and Mt. Vesuvius.  Michele Farro’s family have been growing classic Campagna wines since the 1920s, and some of the vines in this wine date from the Farro family’s original plantings more than 100 years ago.  All of the vines grow in powdery volcanic dust within a mile or so of the Bay of Naples to the west and under the shadow of Mt Vesuvius to the east.

Falanghina has been the main grape here since Greek colonists first introduced it in pre-Roman times. Gown this close to the sea and on pure volcanic soils, Campi Flegrei Falanghina always has plenty of vibrant acidity and a generous dose of minerality.  In 2023, Michele Farro has also captured lovely fruit flavors of perfectly ripe yellow peach and super-juicy tangerine with a sprinkle of lime zest, and just a tiny pinch of sea salt to make all the flavors bigger, bolder, and even more refreshing. The touch of creaminess to the texture just makes the whip of citrus and salt on the finish even more zesty. Certainly a terrific seafood white but nothing wrong with just sipping this solo to beat the summer heat.

For You If:  You’re wondering why we keep nattering on about “salty” wines as if it’s a good thing; you love super fresh, mineral, wines with a nice dollop of fruit; you’re after an Albarino alternative at a much better price.

Not For You If:   You’re looking for something with lowish levels of fruit flavors like Muscadet – the fruit is well balanced here but also nicely forward; you’re after something that feels dense or shows off oak treatment – this has plenty of presence in a lower-weight, unoaked, style.
