Here’s a terrific, hand-crafted, Bordeaux with big fruit, a velvet mouthfeel, and wide-open personality that invites enjoyment with summer cookouts and more elegant dinners, too. It’s about 85% Merlot plus Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Farmer, winemaker and owner Hervé Lhuillier farms sustainably, leaving grass growing between the rows to reduce yields, manure from his own sheep for fertilizer, and organic sprays as needed. He picks in the cool of the night to preserve freshness, sorts his grapes three times, and then ferments cool in tank and ages this wine in French oak for six months.
The result is a big ole comfy couch of a Bordeaux, loaded with rich black currant and blackberry fruit and showing a plush, supple, mouthfeel balanced by notes of graphite/lead pencil and plenty of sweet barrels spice. The fresh acids and fine tannins keep things refreshing and food-friendly, but the dark, juicy, fruit is really the star of the show here.
For You If: You’re after a friendly Bordeaux that will delight Old World/New World fans alike; you welcome really good value in Bordeaux as long as the wine is good, too; you want Bordeaux to enjoy with and without food.
Not For You If: You’re looking for big fruit and really low acidity – check out Paso for value there; you’re more interested in sophistication than immediate “Yum!”
