If you know the Tannat grape or the French wine region Madiran, you probably expect this to be a big, darkly fruited, super-rich, and VERY firmly tannic red. Nope. Peyros makes this one fresh and juicy, with plenty of black olive tapenade to go with the fresh blackberry and blood orange fruit. The tannins are more fine than firm, giving a squeeze that really keeps the fruit and cookfire smoke flavors flowing. As Wine Enthusiast says, “The blend of Tannat and Cabernet Franc moves easily from juicy rich black fruits to structure and spicy wood flavors. The wine is smoky and ready to age further.” Although we’re drinking ours tonight!
For You If: You’re cooking something a little fatty or flavorful over wood and want a wine that balances the richness and amplifies the smoke; you like the flavors and feel of tannat and what that without being clubbed over the head.
Not For You If: You do want to be clubbed over the head with Tannat’s power and muscle – there’s some of that here, but in a more youthfully fresh and easy frame.
