Christophe Pinard took a different path to crafting this plump and easy-drinking Bordeaux Merlot. From a family of Cognac winegrowers, he came to Bordeaux in 1991, purchased 30 acres of land, and built himself barns, cellars and a tasting room. And by “built himself,” we mean “he built them all himself.” So he’s invested in this project and has invested in his land and the environment, earning the HVE3 certification for sustainable farming, water and energy conservation, increasing biodiversity and more.
This is his “second” wine, all Merlot and (unlike the grand vin) no oak. Generous dollop of blackberry and black cherry feel round and fleshy in your mouth and are nicely framed by notes of rich chocolate and a tiny hint of leather way on the back. Fun, easy, all-purpose Bordeaux for casual meals and solo sipping.
For You If: You’re in the mood for Bordeau varietal flavors (currant/cherry/blackberry) without the extra spice/wood flavors and tannins time in oak brings. Or easy/fun reds with plenty of flavor and not too much weight sound tasty.
Not For You If: You’re looking for power, intense grip, lots of weight or potential to improve in cellar (this is ready now and wants drinking through 2025).
