Mendoza Malbec is a bit all over the place stylistically right now, so it’s a bit of a delight to taste this – what we’d call a “right down the middle” Malbec pretty much anyone can enjoy. The vines grow in the Uco Valley, the most exciting slice of Mendoza at around 3,600 feet elevation. Fruit is picked ripe, not pruny or jammy, and 12 months in French oak (30% new) adds spice without making the wine oaky.
The result is directly delicious and fun to drink. Plenty rich, but not at all heavy. Full of fruit, but more than complex to avoid being just fruity. And while there’s more than enough structure here to hold up to savory sausages or a big steak, the finish is smooth enough to just enjoy at a party or when hanging with friends. We like this Malbec. You will too.
For You If: You like Mendoza Malbec and want to explore the unique character of the Uco Valley and taste the influence a Bordeaux family brings to high-altitude Argentine wine; you just want a stash of good, easy, crowd-pleasing red wine that will make everyone happy without breaking the bank.
Not For You If: You’re stuck in that 10 years-ago paradigm of Mendoza Malbec serving as a less expensive Cabernet Sauvignon replacement – this wine tastes like juicy, red fruited, peppery Malbec, not current and chocolate Napa Cab.
“This approachable style leads with lovely aromas of plumeria and spicy red currant that join a silky-textured palate, with a swell of juicy raspberry and currant flavors. Finishes with pepper and slate details around fine tannins. Drink now through 2034. 2,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.”
“This shows notes of crushed blackberries and blueberries with dark chocolate, black cardamom and moist earth, following through to a medium body with a juicy and fluid palate framed with fine, polished tannins. Creamy, melting finish.”
