Lower ABV Sure, you can call this “baby Sancerre” if you like. After all, it’s 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the same kinds of calcaire (limestone/chalk) soils found in Sancerre and neighboring Pouilly Fume, just up the Loire River a bit in a region that has benefitted from the same climate change conditions that make growing crisp, mineral, Sauvignon in Sancerre so difficult these days. From half the price of halfway decent Sancerre these days, it’s a heck of a deal on those terms.
We prefer to consider it a really grown-up and masterful Coteaux du Giennois, though, because it reflects the very best this still cooler growing region can do with Sauvignon, especially on chalky, minerally, soils. There’s a focused leanness, intensity, cut and drive here the really propels the flavors of lemon/lime citrus, early-season peach and fresh white apple along your palate and right on down your throat. It’s stony, minerally, flinty – but also full of fresh fruit flavors and the barest hint of a just cut grass. The wine tingles on entry and a firm squeeze of acidity and minerality on the finish elevates and sustains the fruit flavors through the crisp, dry, finish. In short, this stuff is terrific, as fine a summery Sauvignon as we can imagine. You’ll love it. While it lasts.
For You If: You love French Sauvignon Blanc from prestige appelations like Sancerre and Pouilly Fume and are looking for one you can sip and share every day; you like your Sauvignon citrusy fruit balanced by a bit of minerality.
Not for You If: You’re after the super-exuberant fruit and tropical leanings of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
