Organic/Bio Lower ABV Everything about this wine is wild, starting with the wild, super steep, vineyards of Irouleguy in the French Pyrenees, where almost all the grapes are red. And where all the grapes died from phylloxera in the 1880s and no commercial wine was made until the Brana family planted 20 hectares of vines in 1984. And where the family gave up their organic certification because they couldn't stand the amount of copper that was building up in their soils. A change the caused biodiversity in the vineyards to explode and brought in insects and birds absent from the vines for years. Each Brana label celebrates one of the birds that now roam the alpine vineyards.
This is mainly Gros Manseng with a splash of Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu, a traditional Irouleguy grape largely abandoned in the region. It’s loaded with white citrus and green peach fruit with a hint of mountain herb and raw nuts. The brilliant acidity lifts and sustains the flavors and the sleek texture lets this flow from front to back. Dusty minerality takes things over the top. A brilliant, delicious, distinctive, white.
For You If: You want something with Sauvignon Blanc citrus, Chablis sleekness, and mountain wine wildness; you’re eating something with preserved lemon – this would be great with that!
Not For You If: You’re after an easy-drinking, fruity, and/or rich white – this is almost nervy, salty/tangy, absolutely attention demanding choice.
