Organic/Bio Lower ABV A pretty fabulous example of our favorite style of Southern Rhone white, one where Clairette plays a leading role. When grown in warm (not too hot) locations – say the vineyards on the edges of Rasteau’s forests – and picked early – as winemaker Julie Paolucci does here – Clairette delivers crisp apple, sliced yellow pear and green citrus fruit accompanied by a dash of salty minerality. Paolucci slowly presses whole bunches of the Clairette, richer Marsanne and spicier Bourboulenc grapes used in this wine to add a little phenolic richness to the low alcohol (12.5%) fruit. The Clairette and a portion of the Bourboulenc co-ferment in cool stainless steel while the Marsanne and balance of Bourboulenc are fermented and raised in an old 500L oak cask.
Decanter Magazine called Julie’s whites “spellbinding,” and that certainly applies to this wonderfully concentrated yet vividly fresh 2020 example. Aromas of sliced pear and toasted nuts lead to a rich-feeling mouthful of early-season stone fruit, yellow and green citrus, sliced raw almond, and a hint of Provencal herb. The finish is long, a little creamy, broad and dry, making this just as much fun to sip solo as it is to pair with roasted chicken, richer seafood, or any creamy dish. It’s delicious now and will improve through 2027, although it’s hard to imagine resisting its charms that long.
