Probably a blend of Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and/or Maccabeu with a smaller amount of Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains or Muscat d'Alexandria – but no one knows for certain. The grape were almost certainly ripe and rich in the hot 1949 vintage, one of the best in France in the past 100 years. Grape spirit was added shortly after fermentation began to kill the yeast, retain sugar, and bring the alcohol level up to 15% or so. The harsh, hot, young wine then went into barrel where it sat without topping up for years and years and years, gradually losing water and seeing the alcohol rise to 18%.
The result is a naturally oxidized wine that will continue to thrive in bottle for decades and holds up for weeks after opening. Redolent of burnt nut caramel, orange peel, toffee, and crème brûlée aromas and flavors that changed with each swirl and sip. Tangy and sweet on the impossibly long finish where a note of bitter herb emerges as well. This reminds me of a 40 year Tawny Port but with richer coffee and caramel notes and zestier acidity. Brilliant and captivating.
