Organic/Bio Gigondas is always based on Grenache – here around 70% - with that grape’s big fruit and fleshy texture given structure and savory shadings by additions of Syrah (here 20%), Cinsault (here 10%) and other Rhone grapes. All of Roustan’s farming is certified organic and also certified biodynamic, meaning chemicals are shunned and maximum effort is given to caring for a diverse biosphere in the vineyard.
The Grenache shows here in the wine’s deeply ripe raspberry puree and baked cherry fruit and in the fleshy, generous, mouthfeel. Syrah shows up in the form of a smoky/savory complexity, a hint of black olive and in the very fine, almost sandy, tannins. The Cinsault adds a sprinkling of zested orange peel and fine raspberry leaf freshness. Including 30% whole clusters – grapes still on the stems – in the fermenter gives spice and more grip. And the higher-altitude vineyards and chalky limestone soils add a sense of crushed gravel minerality that ties the whole wine together. A delicious Thanksgiving and beyond red to enjoy with all kinds of hearty meals now – 2034.
For You If: You love wines with plenty of fruit AND more than just fruit; you’re after a wine that feels big and substantial but won’t weigh you down – this is just 13.5%, low for this much body and fruit.
Not For You If: You’re after a wine that’s light or smooth – this feels substantial and ample and is silky/sandy on the finish rather than velvety/smooth.
"A blend of 70% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault, the 2022 Gigondas from Domaine d'Ourea is showing beautifully today. Revealing a delicately oaky and smoky bouquet of peony, garrigue, licorice, lead pencil and dark berries, it's medium to full-bodied, delicately tense and taut with a juicy, charming core of fruit, velvety tannins and a long, ethereal and peppery-inflicted finish. This wine promises to drink brilliantly over the next decade. It was made with 30% whole clusters and matured for 14 months in concrete tanks."
"Mixing 70% Grenache with 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsaut, the 2022 Gigondas starts off with ample reduction. Time in the glass slowly releases red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minty gradations. Full-bodied and concentrated, the polished and refreshing 2022 closes with a zesty slice of grapefruit on the complex aftertaste."
