Look, we’ve yet to find a Zin that was both satisfyingly ripe (i.e., not toughly tannic and herbal) and under 14.5% alcohol. The grape needs hang time and that means alcohol. But it turns out you can make 15% abv Zin that feels light, deft and fresh and actually works beautifully solo and with burgers, stew, tacos, whatever. Bold wild red berry fruit, cracked pepper and a whiff of licorice aromas and flavors shine in this old school wine fermented in tank and aged in good old American oak. More of a wine-drinker’s Zin than a Zin-head’s wine, but that’s cool with us.
For You If: You’re in the mood for unabashedly all-American wine full of fruit, flavor and body that stays fully dry and doesn’t sear your sinuses with alcoholic burn; want to impress a crowd of casual wine drinkers without breaking the bank.
Not For You If: 15% alcohol is a deal-killer; you want either the hedonistic, wallop over the head fruit and oak most typical of Zin or the intellectual purity and restraint of Burgundy.
