Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is built for vintages like 2022, with it’s southerly exposure capturing plenty of sun and steady, cooling, evening breezes slowing ripening and locking in freshness. Here 70+ year-old vines delver all the potential of the vintage and site in a powerful, intense, Gevrey. Black fruited at the core, a lovely burst of fresh red cherry gives lift to the layers of iron ore, spice and coffee accents. It’s still Burgundy-elegant on the palate, but with huge intensity and drive. As the 50% new oak integrates further and the palate and nose unwind over the next 5-25 years, it’s going to be a beauty.
For You If: You love great Gevrey-Chambertin, have patience, and like paying a LOT less than wines not nearly as impressive from more famous estates.
Not For You If: You want something easy and fun tonight – this is fascinating to taste now with air, but really wants 5+ years in cellar to start to show all it has to offer.
