Freisa is Nebbiolo’s cousin. Where Nebbiolo is tall, dark and seriously handsome, Freisa has an untucked shirt, grass stains on its knees and has clearly been rolling around in flower petals and raspberries because, my goodness, does it smell good! Like Nebbiolo, plenty of acid and tannin and – in this case – a kick of rosemary/wild herb on the grippy, red-fruit, finish. If you cellar it a decade, it will be nearly indistinguishable from Nebbiolo. But it also won’t be nearly as much fun, so get some salami or a rich stew or spicy pizza and guzzle this now. All of winemaker Annalisa Bocchino’s wines are delicious, but this one especially.
For You If: You want a wine that will take you on a bit of a ride from perfumed scents to zesty fruit to savory complexity; you like a wine that squeezes and grips a little; you share the good taste of the whole CBC team, who love this.
Not For You If: You’re looking for refined, elegant, sophisticated – this is more joyful than polished; you’re after smooth and/or easy drinking – this has some grip and likes to join a dinner party with food.
