Grand Cru Chardonnay is the heart and soul of Domaine Jean Pernet and this is one of the finest values in high quality Blanc de Blancs we’ve seen in years. It’s 100% Chardonnay from Grand Cru sites in Le-Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Chouilly done in steel, blended with around 20% wine from a perpetual reserve and given with 36 months on the lees before disgorgement.
The color is shimmering pale gold and the bubbles super tiny, fine and persistent. The toast and buttered brioche notes from time on the lees marry perfectly with crisp Granny Smith apple, fresh hazelnut, and bright lemon citrus aromas and flavors. The mouthfeel is fine and lightly mineral, with the 5 g/l dosage broadening the feel through the mid-palate before the finish turns crisp, snappy, and super fresh. I suspect this will get even better over the next 3-5 years, but see no reason to wait to enjoy with something like trout almondine, scallops in brown butter, or just a nice, creamy, cheese tonight. A terrific deal in very fine Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.
For You If You: Want to be able to afford drinking Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs more than once a month (or once a year!).
Not For You If: You don’t like a bit of toasty/brioche character in your bubbles – it’s not overwhelming here, but definitely present.
