Organic/Bio There’s a reason that ever since we introduced you to this wine in 2012, it’s been the best-selling Pinot Grigio in the shop every single year. Bolzano’s Kaltern co-op winery’s growers tend tiny plots of vines running up and down the Dolomites in Alto Adige (or, for the majority of German speakers there, Sud Tyrol). This is Grigio with character and cut, super ripe pear, apple, peach and citrus fruit and a long finish that proves Pinot Gris can have salty minerality when it’s grown right and made simple and clean. It’s a great match with everything from salads to fresh fish, spicy Thai or cilantro accented Vietnamese dishes. Or, just sip it all by itself for a delightful and delicious refreshment break.
For You If: You like flavor and character in your Pinot Grigio and prefer not to spend a lot of money to get it; you like the sleek, almost steely, feel on the sides of your tongue you get when you drink this; you want to imagine you’re enjoying aperitivo hour in a quaint café after a day of hiking or skiing in the Dolomites.
Not For You If: You prefer a kiss of oak in your whites; you like your white wine “neutral” and super-crisp (vs the just-right crisp here); funny bottle shapes make you nuts – they make us nuts, too, but we get past that here.
