The vines Jim Maresh planted on their own roots back in 1970 is today arguably the best, and certainly one of the most important, vineyards in the Dundee Hills. Jim’s grandson uses almost all the fruit for his Arterberry Maresh wines, with just a few rows and blocks here and there reserved for the use of only one outside winemaker: Kelley Fox. Her Pinots from the Red Barn, Royal Ann and Start of Bethlehem blocks are always some of the most highly-rated and sought-after wines of every vintage.
The Liminal Pinot is a new wine from the original 1970, own-rooted, plantings and while I'm sure Kelley told me the story behind carving out these vines for this cuvee, I'm afraid I lost the narrative thread because I was pretty lost in the wine. The best note I could write goes like this: "This is lovely and pure with stellar tannins and sweetly fruited raspberry. 'Nourishing' (as Kelley says) and pure. There’s a liqueur like character here with a struck match of reduction. Don't want to spit. Now and 15 years?"
Kelley's note is better: "It is ethereal and light of being-and beautifully disarming. Of course, the nose is full of Hood strawberries with the cool freshness of rain and the Pacific Ocean in the spring air, along with spices and other delicious notes that are ineffable. This silk winged Maresh has a long finish and is packed with pleasure." Very little made and we’re thrilled to have 60 bottles to offer you.
"A gorgeous perfume lifts from the glass of the 2021 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard Liminal revealing notes of rhubarb, rosehip, and raspberry eau di vie. Coming from vines planted in close proximity to walnut trees and pouring a vibrant ruby color with youthful hints of orange, it offers fine tannins, a linear, weightless feel, and a clean, long, perfumed finish. It is very attractive now but will have significant longevity over the coming 6-8 years."
