Just 340 cases made and 7 for the whole state of Virginia – not enough of what just may be the finest Willamette Valley Pinot Noir I’ve ever tasted. The vineyard formerly known as “Sojourner” sits in the Eola Hills at about 650 feet elevation with a south/southwest exposure - so plenty of afternoon sunshine - but is also fully exposed to the cold winds blowing off the Pacific and into the Willamette Valley through the Van Duzer Corridor. Ken calls this cool, exposed, site "the Musigny of the Eola Hills" and while I've not had enough Musigny to verify that, there's definitely a Burgundian blend of elegantly ripe fruit and iron-ore and saline minerality here. And more than enough rich, deep, red-berried fruit. Decant now or, better, drink from 2027.
For You If: Look, the wine is what we call “fully priced” but is still comfortably less expensive than many “prestige” Willamette Valley Pinots made by famous French guys that don’t taste this good. So “For You If” you want to drink a truly great Pinot Noir for <$100.
Not For You If: While “Burgundian” in some ways, it’s not Burgundy – more fruit, less earth- so if you’re after Musigny, this ain’t it; you’re after something easy and smooth and solo-sipping-friendly – this is structured and demands your attention.
