A joyful, plump and fun rosé Champagne from old plantings of Pinot Meunier in the eastern part of the Marne Valley. It’s a 60/40 blend of the current and most recent previous vintages (so 2021/2020 here) and built up from 60% Meunier made white, 10% Meunier made red, and 30% Meunier allowed to macerate on the skins before pressing – the traditional rosé production method in the south.
There’s a lot of fruit flavor in Laherte’s Menuier. To prevent it from taking over, around 40% of the reserve wine is aged in oak and the wine gets a fairly short stay on the lees – just over 24 months. And then is finished very crisp and fresh at 2.5 g/l dosage. As Wine Advocate says, this release “bursts with aromas of red berries, peonies, licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's layered and vinous, with a ripe core of fruit and brisk girdling acids.” We especially love the ease here; as Vinous says, it’s “a wine that does not try to be anything more than it is.” Which is delicious fun!
For You If: A "drinker's rose" is what you're after - this is boisterious, playful, fun and keeps the serious complexity and structure hidden beneath a big mouthful of ripe red berry fruit.
Not For You If: You're after rose with a bit of sweetness - for all the fruity, this is dry and crisp on the raspberry-laced finish.
