Organic/Bio Lower ABV Checks all the “geek” boxes: new winery, obscure growing region, unusual grape, biodynamic farming, and very low alcohol (just 11.5%). Even a charming label! But this is actually a wine for the masses, at least for the masses of folks who enjoy vibrant, stony, salty, enlivening whites like old-school Chablis or wish Swiss whites weren’t so darn expensive.
Charming story, too. Sylvain Liotard was born in Grenoble and working as a carpenter when he decided wine was his calling in 2014. He started a business refurbishing wine barrels in Savoie in the French Alps to gain access to more experienced vignerons before buying a few small vineyards in Apremont and Abymes, mainly in places too remote or steep to appeal to other wineries. And then, as importer Ed Addiss says, “he farmed the hell out of them.”
This is just his 7th vintage and his most unusual wine, Rousette De Savoie. It's 100% Altesse (called Rousette locally), a grape that gives richer, waxier, wines than the more common Jacquere. It’s loaded with tangy white peach and nectarine fruit, mountain herb and flower and salty stone aromas and flavors. There’s a delightful feeling of volume with pretty much zero weight and a satisfyingly tangy/salty finish. It’s a little like cool-vintage Chablis, has something in common with Swiss whites from Fendant, and should tickle the taste buds of dry Riesling fans. Mainly, though, it’s yummy and gulpable and wildly under priced.
For You If: You want the character of Chablis with a dash of mountain herbs; you love wines with loads of mouthfeel and texture but not a ton of fruit and dry, rocky, finishes.
Not For You If: You're after a fruity white - this is all about the other stuff; you want something thin, tart and/or sharp - this is surprisingly rich and easy.
