Organic/Bio Lower ABV Sicily’s Nero d’Avola grape can get heavy and pruny and very simple, but here the Sala sisters coax terrific freshness and even purity from their 15 year-old vines in western Sicily. The secret (other than hardworking organic farming) is the cooling breezes from the sea nearby. Juicy dark red fruit, a hint of something floral, and fine tannins keep the flavors pumping and make this an outstanding cookout and summer red. As Mary writes, "the Sala sisters and the terroir make this wine a somewhat translucent red with bright acidity, tension, and elegant fruit. As someone who loves Burgundy, this is the style of wine that makes my mouth water."
For You If: You want the big flavors of sunny Sicily without the big alcohol - this is a snappy-fresh 12.5%; you're after a refreshing red that could take a chill, although it doesn't need it.
Not For You If: You're after something thick or heavy - Nero d'Avola does that well in warmer sites, but this is from nearly seaside vines and gives a cooler, fresher, expression.
