Grow your classic Port grapes - Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca - in A-rated Port vineyards. Harvest by hand and then toss the grapes in stone lagers - vats - and walk across them and through them until the gentle pressure of human feet extract loads of juice and color and structure. Start the fermentation and then - in a twist - let it finish the wine dry at around 14% rather than fortify it to 20% while still sweet. This is how you make a terrific dry Douro Valley red!
Which is what Filipe Ferreira has done here in a wine full of the dark, dusky, stony flavors of the Douro Valley with remarkable freshness and easygoing tannins at the end. The Wine Enthusiast 91 point praise of the 2021 lets you know what to expect: "“This rounded wine is softly textured, with great black fruits set beside the juicy acidity and ripe berry flavors. The balance is impeccable, with a fresh edge set against generous dark fruits."
For You If: You're looking for a hearty, fruit-filled, red with the structure for steak or stew and an easy, supple, finish that invites solo sipping; you enjoy New World red blend-levels of fruit and want that in a wine with definite Old World style.
Not For You If: You're looking for a more typical chewy, oaked, Douro red - this is oak-free and much easier to drink.
