Portugal’s Douro Valley is best known for fortified Port and big, intense, firmly structured dry reds that feature dried fruit flavors that can only be called “Porty.” This is a bit different. Same grapes - Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional – but a higher altitude site just barely in the Douro Valley where Atlantic breezes keep things cooler (especially at night). Captures all the dark blue/black fruit, power and muscular grip you'd expect from these native grapes and nice accents of coffee, bitter chocolate and dried herb. And stays surprisingly round and fresh for the Douro with just a touch of spice from six months in French oak. I don’t think many wine drinkers would guess the price here.
For You If: You’re looking for “hearty” but not heavy or astringent; you prefer Cabernet Sauvignon, but realize that all of it at this price point is disgusting; you want to remember (or prepare for) your Douro River Valley cruise.
No For You If: You want to taste the flavors of traditional French grapes – because this tastes like Portugal!; even if it’s really fine and ripe, a lot of tannin isn’t your thing.
