Organic/Bio Lower ABV What happens when you grow the Gamay of Beaujolais, the Pinot Noir of Burgundy and the Malbec of Cahors on the flint and silex soils of Valencay in France's western Loire Valley? Well, if the grower/winemaker is Sophie Siadou and the importer Mary Taylor, something pretty darn delicious. Valencay is best known for its distinctive pyramid-shaped goat cheeses, but locals have always grown plenty of wine to wash them down with. The whites here are snappy Sauvignon Blanc and the reds a blend of Gamay, Pinot, and Malbec (called "Cot" here).
Picked fresh and aged 18 months in old oak casks, this if fine, earthy, all-purpose red. Tangy raspberry, black currant and cherry fruit pick up complexity from accents of fresh flowers and sweet spice and has a just right touch of tannin to work at table. As Mary Taylor writes, "The archetypal 'country wine,' intrinsically designed for drinkability, it would be ideal with roast chicken, any kind of barbecue— or, even better, a nice chalky slice of Valençay cheese."
For You If: You're in the mood for a French bistro red - one of those wines that have plenty of fruit but aren't fruity and just enough structure to make anything you're eating taste good.
Not For You If: You're looking for something full of ripe fruit or that feels dense and velvety - this is more fresh, bright, and juicy than that.
