The first vintage overseen from start-to-finish by the former team at Quilceda Creek pushes Matthews to the very top-tier of Columbia Valley Cab houses. This is their Bordeaux blend of roughly equal parts Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc and Merlot plus Malbec and Petit Verdot. It’s focused, intense, and rich with dark black fruit wrapped in spice and chocolate and finishing with pinpoint, mouthwatering, tannins. Outstanding.
For You If: You’re looking for a wine that tastes like $100 but costs half that; you’re after a stylish steak wine to drink now and for 15 or so years; you want ripeness and intensity but also focus and precision.
Not For You If: You’re in the mood for plush, lush and soft – this has plenty of ripeness and power and finishes with firm, spicy, tannins.
"Made from 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 29% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Claret opens with a broad, deep and juicy profile. It marks a monumental shift in the house style, showcasing a step in the right direction for quality-focused wine crafted with specific intentions. This wine is big and juicy, with a generous and well-rounded character that is not lacking in any aspect. The Claret is fresh and complex, unfolding fruit, oak and spice layers. It features fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity, creating a brilliant and flavorful finish that has me craving food. Bravo. The wine aged 19 months in 27% new French oak. The 2021 vintage marks a pivotal point for the Matthews brand."
