Lower ABV “Classed up Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc” undersells this a bit, but you get the idea. Fruit from the estate’s best blocks is picked just right ripe at 12.5% alcohol and fermented cool. Then 80% ages on the lees (spent yeast cells) in small steel barrels and 20% in old French oak. This knocks back what would otherwise be overly intense fruit and adds plenty of texture to the pink grapefruit, kiwi and papaya flavors and softens things to drinkable perfection. Plenty of solo sipping fun here and lots of potential at table with seafood, dishes with fresh herbs, salads, etc.
For You If: You love the wild fruit of NZ Sauvignon and are in the mood for just a touch of restraint and texture; you’re after the perfect match for a dish laced with cilantro, dill, mint and/or other soft herbs.
Not For You If: You prefer more minerality than fruit in your Sauvignon Blanc – Sancerre this ain’t; you want to taste noticeable oak flavors.
