We don't know where Monica originated, but it came to Sardinia in 1400 with Camaldolese monks. And that it's a terrific red grape for the southeastern corner of the island where the Pala family farms. A bit like a cross between Grenache and Gamay, it feels fleshy and round in the mouth but without excess weight or fat. Then huge baked strawberry fruit balanced by a sense of deep earthiness and finishing fresh with light, fine, tannins. The kind of red that will sing with seafood, lamb, sausages, olives - pretty much any good food. And you can chill it a bit if you like for summer enjoyment, too. Crazy delicious if unfortunately limited.
For You If: You enjoy Spanish Garnacha or Grenache-based Cotes du Rhones and want something that feels lighter (although still big at 14.5%) and easier to enjoy on a warm day.
Not For You If: You're looking for a "light" red - this is big, it just feel that way.
