Organic/Bio Most Etna wineries make an “Etna Rosso” from younger vines or barrels not used in their single-contrada bottlings. Not here. Instead Passarosso is a blend from some of the oldest vines in Passopisciaro's crus and delivers the essence of Etna’s north side as a whole. Powerful but vibrant, dark but still nicely juicy, this is a terrific bargain and a heck of a wine.
Bright and shining ruby, showing aromas of wild strawberries, almond paste and smoky minerality. It is firm on the palate, with the dusty texture of nerello mascalese grapes, but also with quite a full body. Sternness on the finish is balanced by crisp acidity. Will soften with four to five years of aging.”
“The 2022 Passorosso is spicy in the glass with an herbal thrust up front, giving way to ginger-tinged dried cherries and dusty sage. This is silky-smooth with ripe red and hints of blue fruit. Brisk acidity motivates the mouthfeel as the 2022 takes on a salty savoriness toward the close. It finishes with outstanding length and concentration, leaving a coating of fine tannins and a resonance of licorice on the close. This is far from your average Etna Rosso, with nearly 50% of the fruit hailing from Contrada Guardiola.”
