Organic/Bio Pierre Jean Villa is a child of the Northern Rhone but learned to make wine in Burgundy, which may be why his wines show uncommon elegance. This is from a parcel that was St Joseph until 2018’s reduction in the AOC and it shows that level of velvet density. Savory and complex, it delivers bold roasted meat, black olive and black fruit aromas and flavors long, perfumed and finely tannic. Delicious already and improving 3-4 years, it’s an outstanding value.

For You If:   You’re interested in exploring Northern Rhone Syrah and want a warm (and affordable) welcome to that savory, minerally, style; you’re a St. Joseph fan who wants to drink it at a much better price than usual.

Not For You If:   You’re after Shiraz-levels of fruit intensity/ripeness or want something austere – this is plenty generous with Northern Rhone minerality and finesse.
