Agiorgitiko translates as “St George’s Grape,” probably for a chapel in Nemea in the Peloponnese. It’s the region’s best grape and gives wines ranging from light and fruity to dark and dusky, but always with lots of color and plush tannins. This example sees time in small oak, adding a smoky/vanilla sheen to the black cherry and plum fruit. The sweet fruit in the middle is perfectly balanced by a hint of earthiness. A terrific food wine for anything from grilled lamb to North African tagine. Yum.
For You If: You’re looking to try a classic Greek red polished up with just a touch of new wood; you’re after a steak wine that isn’t Cabernet Sauvignon.
Not For You If: You like your reds really soft and smooth – this has satisfying crunch in the middle and fine tannins on the finish.
