A fantastic introduction into Austria’s most important quality red wine varietal interpreted through the lens of modern winemaking and available at a terrific value price from our good friend, Austrian importer Klaus Wittauer. Blaufränkisch is known for its dark color, rich black cherry fruit, deep texture, and accents of sweet spice and cracked pepper. Ernst and Roland Steindorfer accentuate those features and add a touch of velvet to the texture by farming their fruit for perfect ripeness (at a modest 13.5% alcohol) and aging the wine 17 months in new French oak. The result is a wine that has the texture and spice to appeal to Napa Cabernet fans and the gutsy body and peppery energy Cotes du Rhone lovers adore. More than three years from harvest, this is ready right now to match up with grilled meats, spicy foods, and to sip solo as well. And it will just keep getting better through 2030.
