The grape here is St Laurent, a native Austrian varietal that probably emerged as a cross of Pinot Noir and another local grape. St Laurent wines are always dark in color and have plenty of structure, but picking ripe and judicious use of oak turns the texture velvety and highlights blackberry fruit and a natural sweet spice.
Here the fruit is more red toned - think red cherry and raspberry - on the nose with a pretty note of oak spice and hint of kirsch. On the palate it's rich and even powerful, but still finessed, showing deep red cherry fruit, exotic spice, smoke and dried floral flavors. Mouthfiling in volume, there's a bite and freshness here that makes this wine captivating to taste and superb at table. Try it now with a decant and cellar for up to a decade for even more earthy spice.
