Lower ABV “Grünschnabel” – literally a young duck (a “green beak”) – is what Austrians call a “whipper-snapper” or “newbie.” Here it’s the first wine the Steiningers release from the new vintage, full of Ginger Gold apple and stone fruit enlivened by dashes of lime zest and white pepper and sugar snap peas. A touch of tingle gives the ripe fruit lift and keeps the flavors pumping through a nicely mouthwatering finish. Good Grüner!
For You If: You’re looking for Grüner’s classic balance of fruit, acidity and minerality with just a touch more emphasis on the fruit; you want a lovely “luncheon” white to sip solo and with all kinds of fresh and crunchy salads.
Not For You If: You’re after the leaner, more mineral, style of Steininger’s “regular” Kamptal Grüner; you want some thing really sharp or very mellow – this is in between.
