With only 800 cases produced and plenty of customer demand, we’re not sure why a wine that tastes so expensive is still available at such a great value price. But we’re certainly glad that’s the case! It’s from Neil Koch who learned winemaking working with Philippe Melka and grape/wine buying while at Turrentine Brokerage, helping California growers and winemakers buy and sell fruit and wine from some of the state’s most important sites. At his side gig, The Dude, Neil grabs exceptionally well-priced fruit and wine himself and turns it into top-notch, very affordable, bottles for value-seekers like all of us.
Here the fruit comes from two Russian River Valley vineyards just around 9 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. It’s a blend of Calera, Swan, Dijon 777 and Pommard clone Pinot he has picked at night to lock in freshness. He destems about 80% and gives the grapes a 7 day cold soak to gently extract flavor. After a gentle ferment, the wine ages 15 months in French oak (55% new).
If that sounds like the kind of treatment someone would give a $60+ Russian River Pinot…well, that’s pretty much what it tastes like, too! Aromas of spiced raspberry, wild strawberry, sweet spice and a hint of smoke jump from the glass nicely. It's full, round, and layered on the palate with plenty of dark fruit nicely balanced by accents of rose petal, damp earth, and spice. There's more than enough tannin here to handle all kinds of food, but it's so silky smooth that the structure never gets in the way of just drinking it solo.
