The most delicious California Syrah I’ve tried in years is a blend of 86% Syrah and 14% Viognier from one of the coldest vineyards in California, co-fermented and with most of the Syrah left on the stems. The Syrah aromas and flavors are most prominent, showing succulent blue/black fruits with savory accents we try to describe with terms like roasted meat, smoke and earth. The Viognier shows as a hint of fresh flowers on the nose and a captivating hint of something almost peachy on the palate.  And, throughout, a noticeable jolt of pepper, which Randall explains, is due to “rotundone, the molecule that imparts the quality of pepperiness to wines, a sesquiterpene somewhat ubiquitous in many grapes that we know and love, and whose formation is favored by cooler climes, lower light conditions and a long hang time on the vine.”

For You If:   The combination of cool-climate verve and aromatics plus a rich, almost velvety, texture from California sunshine sounds delightful; you’re after a complex and refreshing wine that will shine sipped solo as well as with anything roasted or grilled; you just want to taste what Randall Graham is up to post-Bonny Doon.

Not For You If:   You’re after the austerity of typical Northern Rhone Syrahs or the fat, unctuous, richness of many California examples – as Randall writes, “All of the above is just fancy way of saying that The Language of Yes owes a cultural and aesthetic, even moral debt to the wines and vignerons of southern France. However, bear in mind that what we are trying to achieve here is not to blindly emulate the Frenchies, but rather, to try and find our own original style and voice, informed by the uniqueness of the vineyards, climats, and by the (mostly) sunny disposition of the Central Coast of California.”

James Suckling: 92 Points

"Real syrah here with berry, smoke, earth and grilled meat character. Medium-bodied with polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Sleek and toned. Some crushed stone, too."

Wine Spectator: 92 Points

"Precise and detailed, with handsome raspberry and dried cherry flavors that take on highlights of savory meat, licorice and black olive, finishing with medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 1,166 cases made."

Wine Advocate: 92 Points

"The 2021 Syrah Rancho Réal Vineyard, a blend of 86% Syrah and 14% Viognier matured in neutral French barriques, is bursting with scents of blackcurrants, cracked pepper, thyme, bitter chocolate and violet, opening up to further nuance as it spends time in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is soft and chalky with mouthwatering acidity and layered, crunchy fruit, and it has a long finish replete with herbal and savory tones. This is so crunchy, fresh and easy to drink!"
