Organic/Bio “Super-Tuscan” wines don’t have to be “super” – the term came about in the 1980s to describe wines like Sassicaia and Sammarco that failed to qualify for any Tuscan DOC label (usually because they used the “wrong” grapes) but still generated plenty of critical praise and consumer demand. But “super” is a fine descriptor for this blend of equal parts Cabernet Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grown in the prime Chianti village of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Very dense plantings and multiple green harvests keep yields super low here, allowing capturing the ripeness and power of the outstanding 2020 harvest.
Critical ratings of 93, 94 and 95 points are a regular thing for Al Passo and you’ll be seeing them around over the next few months. We think it’s easily the finest vintage of Al Passo yet, with loads of really ripe, but wonderfully fresh, black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit accented by notes of fresh cedar, earth, leather and spice. The tannins give a gentle grip at the end to propel the juicy fruit flavors through the finish, but then melt away, leaving a smooth, flavorful, impression behind. As James Sucking wrote of the 94 point 2017 edition, “A beautiful, ripe wine, offering plums and chocolate, as well as tile and walnuts. It’s full and layered with beautiful fruit and caressing tannins. Rock on.”
"The 2020 Al Passo is a powerful, deep wine. A blast of dark fruit, chocolate, mocha, dried herbs, leather and menthol makes a strong opening statement. This heady, internationally styled wine has a lot going on. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade or so. The Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend works especially well."
