Lower ABV Mendoza doesn’t necessarily equal oaked Malbec, especially at Ver Sacrum where Eduardo Soler founded his winery to make Rhone varietals, not Malbec. And where egg-shaped raw concrete tanks are preferred to French oak. Here the grape is Mouvedre (Monastrell in Spain) giving a bit of the Rhone’s earthy black fruit with a juicy feel to the fruit and loads of energy and grip on the mouthwatering finish. A terrific burger and pizza red with more substance and volume than you’d expect for no oak and lower abv.
For You If: You enjoy juicy, lower tannin, feeling reds like Beaujolais or Pinot Noir with the flavors you’d normally expect from a Cotes du Rhone.
Not For You If: You’re looking for a Mendoza “Cab replacement” red with loads of richness and spicy oak – this has plenty of flavor, but it’s all about the tangy, nearly tart, fruit.
