Viognier’s spiritual (and perhaps original) home is the Northern Rhone commune of Condrieu where this sometimes fleshy grape adds sleek minerality to its deep stone fruit and floral perfume. In the cool 2021 harvest, that minerality and under-ripe peach acidity are elevated in ways that drive the pretty flavors of stone fruit, white flowers and tangerine through a long palate and longer finish. Beautiful wine here for sushi, shellfish, or anything in a creamy sauce.
For You If: You enjoy the complex aromas and flavors of Viognier but sometimes find the wines a little fat or oily – this is pure, stony, intense; you’re looking for a brilliant pairing to emphasize and balance fresh seafood’s natural sweetness.
Not For You If: You don’t like floral/aromatic wines at all, even if they are also minerally and focused; you’re after the broader, almost sweetly fruited, character of most New World Viognier – this has lovely fruit, but it’s crunchy and matched by chalky minerality.
