Lower ABV This top Cote Rotie and Condrieu producer has crafted a captivating entry-level Northern Rhone Syrah in 2023. It’s delicious and classic, with savory black olive, graphite, campfire and roasted meat aromas and flavors underpinning the blackberry and blueberry fruit. Silky tannins give nice support to a long, pure, wine with a floral and crushed raspberry flourish at the end.
In her Washington Post article, “12 wines under $25 to enjoy all winter long,” Maggie Hoffman recommends this, saying, "If you cracked black pepper into a fragrant blackberry-blueberry pie, you’d get a sense of this juicy syrah from the northern Rhone. The brambly fruit and five-spice flavors make it a nice match for pretty much any preparation of lamb — or the roasted delights hanging in the window at your favorite local Cantonese spot.”
That pretty much nails it. Hugely drinkable at just 12.5% but with the structure to handle grilled and roasted meats. Again, just delicious Syrah.
For You If: You enjoy the savory complexity of Northern Rhone Syrah and want to enjoy that without cellaring and at a reasonable price; you like structured wines that deliver both flavor and perfume like Barolo or Burgundy and will enjoy something more dark fruited and sleek.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the super-ripe fruit and high alcohol/body of Australian Shiraz or the aromas and flavors of new oak – this is more restrained, silky and lighter than that.
